Post Election Challenges

We have just made it through election season and we have a new Congress that will be take office in January 2005. There was very little legislative activity this fall. Our strategy for 2005 should begin with building the relationships with new and existing members of Congress and our State Legislatures. With that end in mind, I would like to challenge all of you to a letter writing campaign. In this campaign (notice the election lingo) you have two choices. Option one is to write a letter regarding a current issue that is near and dear to you. It could be FLSA, FMLA corrections, Benefits, etc. This can be done through the HR Voice program with standard letters. Option two is to write a welcome note to you all of your legislators. Identify yourself as a member of SHRM, congratulation them on their election, or reelection and offer your expertise as a HR professional. This can also be done through HR Voice by using the customized letter format.

Whether you've never written before, or are a frequent writer, start the new legislative season of right! Remember as HR professionals, it is part of our jobs to focus on legislative issues. As someone once said, "It is better to spend a few minutes righting a letter, than your career dealing with bad legislation!"

For additional information visit the State SHRM Website, or http://www.shrm.org/government. Also be sure to write your legislative representatives at the state and federal level via HR Voice program. You can make a difference!
